New Yorkers apparently are not marriage material: study
New York, New York — the city that never weds?
Half of all New Yorkers have never been married, according to new study from AreaVibes. The “livability” website analyzed data from the US Census Bureau and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to uncover state-by-state trends in matrimony — or lack thereof — over the last decade.
New York County, aka Manhattan, ranks as the “30th most unmarried county” in the US.
Fun fact: There are over 3,000 counties in America. Lexington, Virginia, in Rockbridge County, tops the list, where 67.9 percent of people have tied the knot.
New Yorkers also are throwing another tradition to the wind: 32 percent of women who gave birth here in 2018 were single.
While many Manhattanites might enjoy being perpetually single, New Yorkers in general have slowly started to couple up. Nuptials statewide have spiked 11 percent since 2008, the study finds.
However, many Manhattan women over 65 years of age are not putting a ring on it. The data showed that a substantial 18.8 percent of ladies in this category have never been married. That’s almost 1 in 5 senior women — the fourth-highest ranking in the country. New York state men in the same age bracket have them beat: 24.5 percent of unmarried senior males reside in Hamilton County, in the Adirondacks.
